EATING DISORDERS—WARNING SIGNS

By the time girls reach puberty, they are surrounded by peers trying to be thin and pretty enough to fit in. Many start dieting and have experimented with purging or starving themselves before reaching adolescence. As with drug and alcohol experimentation, these behaviors can turn into an addiction if not treated early enough.

Eating disorders often go undetected because the desire to be thin is so prevalent and accepted in our culture. Also people with eating disorders often look good on the outside. This is especially true with Anorexia, where the individuals are often over-achievers and go to great lengths to be accepted. Though not as common, boys have can eating disorders as well, especially if they are athletes.

Eating disorders have many causes. If there are addictions in the family, then children can be genetically predisposed to eating disorders and other addictions. Also, when family members turn to substances such as food, drugs and alcohol to deal with their feelings, it conditions teens to do the same.

Like alcoholism, an eating disorder is a disease that requires professional help. Therapy provides the opportunity for girls to share their experiences, express their feelings and receive practical guidance for dealing with intense emotions and confusing situations.

Often individuals with eating disorders have physiological imbalances that need addressing. Therefore, we collaborate with doctors and other professionals to ensure that each individual receives the appropriate care they need on all levels.
